Coachella 2015 pre-sale tickets go quickly

The first allotment of passes for the 2015 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival sold out in record time Friday — months before the lineup is expected to be announced.

Pre-sale passes for Weekend 1 went on sale at 10 a.m. and sold out in just over an hour. The allotment of three-day passes the Goldenvoice promoter offered in advance for Weekend 2 sold out in less than 3½ hours.

Last year's pre-sales were made available a little later, on May 24, and the first weekend sold out four days later. Weekend 2 passes sold out two hours later. But, in 2012, Weekend 1 pre-sales sold out in two hours with Weekend 2 passes selling out in four hours.

Goldenvoice announced earlier in the week that the 2015 festival would be held April 10-12 and April 17-19. This offering was the only chance to take advantage of Goldenvoice's layaway plan, which lets festival-goers make a $75 down payment with final payments due the first week of December. Goldenvoice's no-refund policy means anyone who defaults on a payment cancels his or her order and forfeits prior payments.

More passes are expected to go on sale after the lineup is announced, which is usually in mid-January.

A Goldenvoice spokesperson declined to say how many passes were sold before the Los Angeles-based company cut off ticket sales. General admission passes ran $375, while VIP passes cost $799. Safari tent passes are available through Valleymusictravel.com for $6,500 for two adults 18 and over, and two additional guest accommodations costing $1,750 per person.

Coachella is annually ranked the No. 1 major music festival in North America by industry watchdog Pollstar. Former AEG Live Chairman Randy Phillips accurately predicted in 2011 that Coachella would become the first major festival to sell out before its acts were announced.
